Tottenham are the only team to beat Liverpool at Anfield since Kenny Dalglish resumed control last January - but can the Lilywhites repeat the feat tonight?

Liverpool’s reign as the dominant power in English football is now no more than a memory, with only Kenny Dalglish on the sidelines as a permanent reminder to fans of the club’s dominant decades.

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher remain as souvenirs of Liverpool’s most recent Champions League success, but recent years have seen the club slip away from the trophy-laden era that went on for so long.

Tonight they host a Spurs side who are also familiar with barren trophy-winning spells and have, in previous years, been the underdog in this particular fixture.

However, the arrival of Harry Redknapp and a downturn in fortune on Merseyside has seen the tide turn.

Having failed to even qualify for the Europa League last season, Liverpool look set to once again be trailing in Spurs’ wake this time around.

And, having won the last three matches between the sides, including a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane in September, the Lilywhites will be hoping to maintain their superiority over Liverpool with a fourth successive victory this evening.

Indeed, having previously failed to win at Liverpool since 1993, Tottenham’s 2-0 win on Merseyside in May makes them the only team to beat the Reds at Anfield since Dalglish resumed control more than a year ago.

Despite Liverpool’s disappointing league campaign, which has largely seen them occupying the no-man’s land outside the European qualification places, they have enjoyed considerable cup success since the turn of the year.

The two-legged triumph over Manchester City in the Carling Cup was followed four days later by victory over bitter rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Those unlikely successes could potentially transform what was looking to be another season of transition at Anfield into one which could yet yield a trophy (or even two) for the returning ‘King’ Kenny.

Confidence around the club will undoubtedly have been boosted by these consecutive victories over the two main title contenders, and it was followed by last Tuesday’s impressive 3-0 win at Wolves.

The Reds will also have their star striker Luis Suarez available again following his eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

In his absence, the focus had turned to the goal-shy Andy Carroll, and the England international’s goal at Molineux last week perhaps indicated that he is finally ready to try to justify his £35million price tag.

With the club having played eight games in all competitions since the new year, Dalglish must decide whether to recall Suarez immediately, with one of the in-form duo of Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy probably having to make way.

Another player hoping to be involved is the former Spurs target Charlie Adam, who will be keen to make a greater impact than the 28 minutes he managed after being sent off in the 4-0 defeat at the Lane.

Avenging that result, along with a new-found belief, is likely to provide inspiration for Liverpool, who share the honour of remaining unbeaten in the league at home this season with Manchester City - even if seven of the Reds’ 11 home games in the league have been draws.

If their promising 2012 form continues they could well emerge as strong challengers for the top four, and yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge means that a victory over Spurs tonight would leave the Reds just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

The verdict: The prospect of playing Liverpool at Anfield rarely inspires confidence of victory in travelling fans and, considering their recent successes, a win for Spurs would be an impressive feat.

However, even given the return of Luis Suarez and the Reds’ good recent form, Spurs should be hoping to take at least a point. We’ll go for a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
