Haringey Council is scrapping parking charges after 9am each day in its Tottenham car parks in Stoneleigh Road and West Green Road, until the end of January.

It is the latest move by the authority to help the local economy and follows it cutting £1.6million worth of business taxes for riot-hit firms.

The free parking, to encourage more shoppers to the area, lasts all day every day, except for Spurs match days, and charges will still apply before 9am to prevent commuter parking.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Traders have asked for this to help encourage visitors back to the area and this is something we can do to help over the coming months.”

The council’s package of support since the riots has also included payments of more than £180,000 in grants to firms who suffered direct damage, and the launch of the I Love Tottenham campaign with Spurs to encourage shoppers to the High Road.

Cllr Alan Strickland, cabinet member for economic development, added: “Reaching out to our most affected businesses has been top of our list of priorities since this summer’s riots.

“Over the coming weeks and months we will build on the work as we aim to transform Tottenham into a better, brighter and more successful place.”
