David Lammy wants to see positive action to reduce the levels of unemployment in Tottenham, which last month were the fourth highest in the country.

A total of 6,607 Tottenham people were unemployed in January, up by more than 500 since the same time last year.

Unemployment in the area has now topped 6,000 for the last 18 months – levels not seen since turn of the century.

Long term youth unemployment - those aged 16 to 24 out of work for more than six months - is also up more than 90 per cent on this time last year.

Mr Lammy said: “This is yet another month of depressing unemployment figures for the community and another month of government inaction on the issue.

“We have had good news with Spurs and the local council committing to a brand new development in North Tottenham that will provide a welcome boost to the area, but we now need the government to commit too.

“The work programme isn’t working and the government must think bigger. It is time they moved one of the plethora of government agencies – like the DVLA or the Student Loans Company – to Tottenham. We need a game changer here and the time for warm words from Westminster will not be enough to create jobs and opportunities in our corner of north London.”
