Residents in Muswell Hill, Alexandra, Fortis Green, Highgate and parts of Crouch End, Hornsey, Woodside, Noel Park and Bounds Green have started receiving their new 240ltr recycling bins.

The bins are part of Haringey Council’s new recycling and waste scheme, which will save the council £900,000 by making general waste collections fortnightly while recycling continues to be collected weekly.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for the environment, said: “These larger bins will make it easier for people to add more to their recycling waste without it spilling out into their gardens.

“I hope this encourages more recycling as we try to cut waste going to incineration and landfill.”

But some residents have reacted angrily to the new scheme, saying the bins are unsightly, it could increase problems with rats and there is no proof it will encourage more recycling.

There was also anger when the council failed to take up the Government’s offer for extra funds for weekly bin collections.

The new service will extend to the rest of the borough over the course of the year.
