LIVE REVIEW: The Riders of the Night

The Purple Turtle, Crowndale Road, NW1

Music, football and comedy - and not necessarily in that order - is what you get with The Riders of the Night.

A four-piece band with two frontmen who also do a double act, as one punter said "it's like a punk Madness".

The music comes fast and banged out by a capable band with some familiar faces to regular supporters on the terraces at the old Highbury.

Most of the songs originate from Gunners terrace chants which are punked up, with Arsenal history and comic lyrics added to lively effect. Naturally the anthemic tunes have a sing-along feel and it wasn't long before the audience joined in.

This was the first live gig for the Riders, and what an experience it was!

The group are obviously a good time band and the infectious sense of fun emits from the stage and transfers to the audience.

This was a true punk gig but other influences and elements also come to the fore - there's a tip of the hat to Ray Davies with a cover of Kinks classic You Really Got Me.

If you're an Arsenal fan and like a fun night out, then this is the band for you. - PAMELA GUNSELL
