REVIEW: JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY

THE Danish film industry, like Denmark itself, is not well known abroad. Film buffs will be familiar with director Lars Von Trier, but most Danish films fall under the radar. JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY (18) may help to change that.

Jonas (Anders Wodskou Berthelsen) is contented with his life in the suburbs: his wife and children are happy and his job just about pays the bills. All that changes however when he is the likely cause of a young woman, Julia, crashing her car and ending up in hospital.

Concerned about the harm he has caused and fascinated by her beauty, Jonas goes to visit Julia, posing as her boyfriend. When Julia, temporarily blind and suffering from amnesia, takes Jonas to be her real boyfriend, Jonas finds himself living two identities but fails to consider the consequences.

The film reveals all its most exciting moments, including the ending, in the first few minutes. This makes for a bewildering but enthralling beginning.

Cross-cutting and flashbacks heighten the suspense and, unlike many thrillers, the story's emotional elements are sensitively portrayed, making the violence appear even more startling.

The plot is a little far-fetched, and the violence may seem excessive, but director Ole Bornedal's film proves it's time to start paying attention to Danish cinema. - JO CAIRD
