REVIEW: THE REBOUND
 | | |
IN the spirit of cougar-fever that has gripped the imagination of yummy mummies and excitable young men alike, writer and director Bart Freundlich brings the phenomenon to the big screen
in THE REBOUND (15).
Catherine Zeta Jones is the MILF in question, uprooting her very comfortable suburban life and moving to the mean streets of New York after discovering her husband's affair.
Cue various obstacles that get in the way of a quiet and happy life - being a single parent of two, getting back into work, overcoming OCD in the dirty city and dating various unsuitables. That's until the gentle, young and sweet natured nanny (Justin Bartha) enters the scene.
The plot is as predictable as any Hollywood romcom, but its execution is witty enough to make it watchable, although it's a little far-fetched at times (particularly the final scene in which a chance encounter several years on has them reunited without anything to suggest the passing of time except a screen caption).
Zeta Jones as Sandy is perhaps a little less likeable than she should be - her vulnerability manifesting largely as a rather irritating form of neuroticism - but performances are generally good and the subject matter intriguing enough to carry the piece. - PEGGY NUTTALL
