MP Lynne battles to wipe out airbrushing of ads
LYNNE Featherstone MP has launched a battle to boost body image by cracking down on "impossibly perfect" airbrushed ads.
The equalities minister and MP for Hornsey and Wood Green is calling for strict rules to be placed on the fashion industry to prevent girls being "psychologically damaged" by unrealistic body types. It could mean tampered images, such as where Twiggy's wrinkles have been ironed out for an Olay beauty advert or Kiera Knightley's breasts enhanced for a movie poster, could be a thing of the past.
She said in her blog: "The constant pressure to look impossibly perfect, be like the skinny celebrities and conform to imposed stereotypes is creating a rising tide of low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and so on."
The coalition Government plans to talk to magazine and fashion executives this autumn about guidelines to cut down on "unrealistic" advertising and forcing them to carry warnings on airbrushed photographs.
But Ms Featherstone was heavily criticised for branding smaller sized women "stick insects" in her online blog, with critics claiming it does as much harm to single out women for being thin as it does large.
A post by a woman named Jennifer read: "As a naturally skinny woman I take umbrage at your usage of the term 'stick-insect'. Women come in all shapes and sizes.
