Anti-racism festival in funding plea
A CAMPAIGN to bring back an anti-racism festival in Finsbury Park is appealing for funding.
Organisers for UpRise - a replacement for the Mayor of London's axed Rise Festival - say they need £100,000 by the end of March to stage the event.
Coordinator Mike Barnard, a marketer, of Andover Road, Finsbury Park, said: "We are passionate about keeping the memory of Rise alive and we know thousands of Londoners feel the same way. If each of the 100,000 people who attended Rise Festival in 2008 donated just £1, we would reach our target."
The free festival aims to host artists similar to those associated with Rise but for a smaller price tag and an audience of 20,000.
Mr Barnard and his UpRise partner Freya van Lessen, as well as more than 2,500 people who have signed a petition to hold the event, believe the festival's anti-racism message is more important than ever. "With the Mayor of London slashing funding for cultural events and a rise in publicity for far-right views, UpRise aims to display the true picture of London, which is that of a united, vibrant and diverse city," he said.
The cash is needed to ensure the event, pencilled in for June 6, goes ahead. Funding has also been secured from the Trades Union Congress, who set up the Rise Festival.
