£40,000 lottery grant for wildlife haven
A HAVEN for wildlife and nature study is set to have its pond restored, thanks to a Lottery grant of nearly £40,000.
The rescue of the pond, in Railway Fields at the bottom of the Harringay Ladder, will be welcome news for the 1,500 schoolchildren who use it as an outdoor classroom every year.
The pond in the small nature reserve needs to be relined with clay to prevent it drying up.
The water level has dropped by a metre in the last two years, and experts fear the population of frogs, toads and newts will be lost unless repair work is carried out.
National wildlife charity Amphibian and Reptile Conservation will carry out the project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The charity's Rebecca Turpin said: "Ponds are important places for wildlife and for people too, but so many have fallen into disrepair over the years. Our work is bringing these wild places back, making our vision of a wildlife-friendly city more of a reality."
The charity is also looking for residents to set up a friends group to help look after the nature reserve in future.
The site provides the main environmental educational centre for children in Haringey.
