A YOUTH worker from Hornsey is hoping to take the chequered flag after entering a national competition to become a motor racing driver.

Tanya Wint, 30, of Hornsey Lane, is taking part in the Formula Woman Novice Competition - with the prize of a championship drive up for grabs.

She said: "I am a bit of a girl racer. I love driving. I would love to get on a proper race track."

More than 1,300 women applied online for the competition, aimed at fostering female driving talent, but only 500 were chosen for the first race track assessments - Tanya among them.

Her assessment day is on May 11 at a track near Birmingham.

She and other competitors will race around the circuit in lightweight Caterham sports cars, have their fitness tested and make presentations.

The field will eventually be narrowed to 16. The top three drivers will win scholarships to race in the eight-round Formula Woman Novice Championship this summer. The other 13 other will receive part-sponsorship for the event.

Whoever wins the championship will be catapulted into a national race series in 2008 - a prize worth more than £25,000.

Asked how she would feel about swapping life as a youth worker for life in the fast lane, Tanya, who drives an L registration Peugeot 306, said: "Is there even a valid response to that. It would be excellent. I would love it."

The Formula Woman Novice Competition is open to any women drivers aged between 17 and 70.
