'No cycle lane spies'

PLANS to fine drivers £120 for straying into cycle lanes won't be adopted in Haringey - after the council said it had "no plans" to upgrade its traffic cameras. Government legislation expected in November will bring in new penalties for drivers who stray even for a moment into cycle lanes or the cycle boxes at junctions - but a new breed of traffic cameras will be required to enforce the law.

London is expected to see the first wave of cameras, but Haringey Council has said it won't be installing them to police the two "mandatory" cycle lanes - in Tottenham Lane, Crouch End, and Ferry Lane, Tottenham Hale - or the network of "advisory" cycle lanes in the borough. A council spokesman said: "We have no plans to upgrade any of our cameras for the reasons described."

Lordship Lane, the highest-earning road for camera fines in Haringey, and one of the highest in London, doesn't have a cycle lane, but the spokesman pointed out that drivers are increasingly wary of breaking the rules, as income dropped from £1.4million in 2004/5 to £555,000 in 2005/6.
